Luggage compartment composite coach to Diagram 9

Wooden bodied, six-wheeled chassis

Awaiting restoration
This North Eastern Railway coach was built at the company's York workshops in 1890. It originally had a six-wheeled underframe and has an overall length of 32ft 0 ins. It is described as a luggage composite, as it had a compartment for luggage in the centre along with two third class compartments and two first class compartments.
It survived in passenger service until it passed into the hands of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923, being withdrawn the following year. It was converted into a tool van, with the centre wheelset being removed at the same time. It survived in use in this guise until 1973, when it was acquired for preservation.
The exterior bodywork is in fair condition, although the interior has been gutted. Once restored to its original guise in the next few years it will become a valuable part of the Timeless Trains fleet based at Kirkby Stephen East.
